Known as Kaatza, or the Big Lake by the First Nations inhabitants of the region Cowichan Lake is a prime destination for those who enjoy water activities. At 30 kilometers in length Cowichan Lake is the second largest body of freshwater on Vancouver Island and is great for speedboat, water sport and fishing enthusiasts. Since the early 1900s Cowichan Lake has been known as the fly fishing capital of Canada. From the town of Lake Cowichan, at the head of Cowichan Lake, paved roads run north along the lake to the community of Youbou and south to Mesachie Lake and Honeymoon Bay.
Only 2.5 kilometers away from Beaver Lake Campground/Resort you will find the Cowichan Lake Marina where you can launch your own Jet Ski or speedboat or rent one of theirs. Outdoor enthusiasts visiting the Cowichan Lake area can also enjoy horseback riding, cycling, mountain biking, windsurfing, sailing, rowing, kayaking and canoeing. Local hiking trails such as Bald Mountain and the Cowichan River Footpath will take you through unforgettable scenery and provide photo opportunities like none other!
Beaver Lake Resort is at the gateway to beautiful Nitinat Lake, a salt water tidal lake that stretches to the west coast of Vancouver Island and the breathtaking Carmanah Valley. Make it a day trip to travel to Port Renfrew and explore the tidal pools of Botanical Beach or even do some hiking on the Juan de Fuca Marine trail.

For landlubbers looking for a more relaxed atmosphere theres also bird watching (we are home to over 300 species), museums, sketching or painting, as well as excellent nature and wildlife photography. At Gordon Bay Provincial Park, next to the community of Honeymoon Bay, the Sutton Creek Wildflower Ecological Reserve boasts a spectacular display of wildflowers each spring.
Year round golf enthusiasts can enjoy the five golf courses in the Cowichan region all just minutes away. Start with our very own March Meadows only six kilometres away and the home course for LPGA Tour player Dawn Coe-Jones. Others that you will enjoy are Duncan Meadows in Duncan, Cowichan Golf and Country Club in Duncan, Arbutus Ridge Golf and Country Club in Cobble Hill and Mount Brenton Golf Club in Chemainus.

Less than an hours drive from Beaver Lake Campground/Resort is the town of Chemainus, home of the widely acclaimed Chemainus Theatre, a professional regional theatre company offering Centrestage productions, a Spotlight Series and Theatre for the Young Audience.
In less than 2 hours wine aficionados can visit any one of seven vineyards in the Cowichan Valley, tour their cellars and sample their remarkable wares.
The Quwutsun Cultural and Conference Centre located adjacent to the city of Duncan, is owned and operated by the Cowichan Tribes, the largest First Nations band in British Columbia. There you will find a wide variety of entertainment, educational and cultural experiences that celebrate the craftsmanship, history and legends of the Quwutsun people. |
